F&P Named Among Maryland’s 2025 Empowering Women Award Honorees

Franklin & Prokopik (F&P) has been named one of The Daily Record Maryland’s 2025 Empowering Women award winners.

The Empowering Women Awards honor companies and organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting and advancing women in Maryland. Honorees are recognized for hiring and promoting women, elevating them to leadership positions, advocating for women both internally and externally, and cultivating the next generation of women professionals.

F&P is proud to receive this recognition as a reflection of our long-standing dedication to inclusion and advancement opportunities for women in the legal industry. From our founding, merit-based advancement has been a cornerstone of our culture, fostering an environment of fairness and opportunity.

When the firm was established in 1999, women comprised just 15% of partners nationally—yet 27% of F&P’s Founding Partners were women. Today, F&P is proud to be a majority women-owned firm, with women serving in a wide range of senior leadership roles.

Award winners will be celebrated at the Women’s Leadership Summit on October 30 at the University of Maryland and profiled in a special magazine insert in the October 31 issue of The Daily Record as well as online at https://thedailyrecord.com/event/empowering-women/

F&P looks forward to joining fellow honorees in celebrating this recognition and continuing to champion women’s leadership in the legal profession.

F&P Attorneys Score Jury Trial Victory for High Profile Client

F&P Attorneys Mike Bennett and Sam Schilling recently came out victorious after a three-day jury trial in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. Mike and Sam represented a local restoration company that works on historic landmarks and buildings such as the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Naval Academy, and Washington National Cathedral. The stakes were high since the client relies on their experience modification rating (“EMR”)* to secure their work on these projects. Although numerous attempts were made to settle the matter prior to trial, the Claimant had no interest in settlement and demanded to move forward with the trial.

The jury was tasked with deciding the Claimant’s permanent partial disability following a fall from a ladder that resulted in a dislocated elbow. The defense ramped up with discovery efforts after it was apparent that trial was imminent, including deposing multiple fact witnesses for the Claimant and identifying the best-suited witnesses of their own. This preparation was paramount in securing victory at trial, as the defense introduced testimony from employer witnesses that directly contradicted the Claimant’s alleged physical limitations.

The jury heard from a total of eight witnesses over the three-day trial, and deliberated for over two hours before affirming the Commission’s decision that the Claimant has a 16% permanent partial disability to the arm. This victory not only resulted in the Claimant receiving no additional benefits but also stabilized the company’s EMR, allowing them to continue working on high-profile projects across the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area.

*An EMR is a risk assessment tool used to evaluate a company’s safety performance, which can fluctuate depending on the amount spent on a claim.

F&P Receives Favorable Ruling in COVID-19 Title VII Ruling

Last week, F&P attorneys Ralph Arnsdorf, Scott Phillips, and Patrick Wachter obtained a favorable ruling in a case involving religious discrimination claims under Title VII related to COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Plaintiff Cara Dodson alleged religious discrimination after her employment was terminated for refusing the COVID-19 vaccination. Defendant Lutheran Village at Millers Grant Inc. had denied her request for religious accommodation based on safety concerns for vulnerable residents.

Ms. Dodson is a licensed occupational therapist who worked at Lutheran Village from March 2019 to February 2022, often in close contact with clients. Lutheran Village’s vaccination policy required annual vaccinations unless exempted for medical or religious reasons. Ms. Dodson initially received a religious exemption for the COVID-19 vaccine in January 2021 due to its emergency use status. In September 2021, she requested another exemption, citing concerns about the vaccine’s use of aborted fetal tissue. Lutheran Village denied her request in December 2021, citing increased risks to residents and staff.

The court set multiple deadlines for discovery and motions, with Ms. Dodson’s counsel entering the case in August 2023, and Lutheran Village filed a renewed motion for summary judgment after the close of discovery.

Title VII requires employers to accommodate religious practices unless it causes undue hardship. Lutheran Village argued that accommodating Ms. Dodson would increase the risk of COVID-19 spread among vulnerable populations. The court found that granting the accommodation would impose undue hardship due to health risks.

The court granted Lutheran Village’s motion for summary judgment, concluding that Ms. Dodson’s requested accommodation posed a threat to health and safety. Ms. Dodson’s motion to produce additional evidence was denied due to lack of diligence in pursuing discovery.

As of June 26, 2025, the Plaintiff has filed an appeal of the ruling to the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.

F&P Employee Spotlight on Counsel Andrew P. Hanlin

What lesson have you learned in the past year?
Whatever situation you find yourself in, always ask: What is the next good thing I can do?

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t rely on teachers, friends, family, or anyone else to tell you what you need to know. Go out and find it for yourself.

What do you like to do outside of the office?
I like to visit all the parks in the Richmond area and walk and observe all the plants and wildlife.

What was your first job?
I dressed up as Bunky the Bear Mascot for Funland in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

What is your practice area, and how did you choose it?
Insurance Defense. I started off working for a major car insurance company in-house, loved it, and have been doing it ever since. In my opinion, we really are the good guys.

What is your favorite thing about working with your clients?
Guiding them through what can be a scary process with kindness.

If you could have lunch with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Living or dead? In either case, it would have to be a philosopher I admire, like Jürgen Habermas or David Hume.

What’s your proudest accomplishment?
Raising my son, August Azadi Hanlin, age 5.

F&P Employee Spotlight on Principal Michael T. Bennett

What is your favorite restaurant/show/event in Baltimore?
If there’s an event in Baltimore that is better than catching an O’s game with a beer in hand, I have not found it. Camden Yards is an absolute gem and still one of the best ballparks in the league.

Do you have a favorite quote?
“Passion is what makes life interesting, what ignites our soul, drives our curiosity, fuels our love and carries our friendships, stimulates our intellect, and pushes our limits. In my life I want to create passion in my own life and with those I care for, I want to feel, experience, and live every emotion.” – Pat Tillman

What do you like to do outside of the office?
My wife and I are both really active and love taking our two kids to explore nature, with Harpers Ferry being one of our favorite spots to hike. We’re not far from Patapsco State Park, and I really love mountain biking, kayaking, and fishing there. Nothing beats a game of football/wiffle ball in the neighborhood with the kids too.

Have you recently read any good books or seen any good movies you would recommend?
“The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “11/22/63” by Stephen King are some of my favorite novels. “The Greatest Generation” by Tom Brokaw and “The Autobiography of Malcom X” both do a tremendous job at transporting you to a different time to view the world from another perspective.

What is your favorite food?
Mexican and it’s not even close. Tacos, burritos, empanadas, tamales, enchiladas, fajitas, chimichangas, etc. Just put some jalapenos on them, slide them my way, and watch them disappear.

What is your all-time favorite city or town, and why?
Knoxville, Tennessee, will always have a piece of my heart due to the family and memories I have there. Put me there on a Saturday during football season and I’m in heaven. Go Vols!

Do you have any bizarre talents?
I’m not sure if it qualifies as a talent, but it is bizarre. I was the mascot at my kids’ elementary school last year for their field day, and then got recruited by the principal at wife’s school to do the same. I ran the obstacle courses before dunking a basketball (ok, it was a 7’ rim), so I have to step up my game now. If I leave it up to my kids I’ll end up getting shot out of a cannon or jumping through a flaming hoop this year.

What are some of the biggest life lessons you have learned?
Treat everyone in the building with respect, whether it’s the CEO or the janitor. Embrace new experiences, and always maintain a sense of humor and gratitude.
